Chelsea fans chant ‘we are staying up’ following Frank Lampard’s first victory this season
Chelsea fans have endured a rough few weeks since Frank Lampard returned as interim boss, so they made the most of taking the lead away at Bournemouth with a jibe at themselves
Chelsea fans broke out into a chant of “we are staying up” after only their third goal scored under Frank Lampard.
The Blues took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Conor Gallagher nodded home N’Golo Kante’s cross for his second strike since Lampard returned as interim boss last month.
Noni Madueke, who netted in the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in midweek, was the only other player to find the back of the net for the Englishman in recent weeks – so the travelling supporters made the most of what has been a rare sight of late.
Having lost six games on the trot – a run of form which meant their Premier League safety hadn’t been guaranteed – they belted out “we are staying up” from the away end.
Fans watching on from afar were equally chuffed, with one tweeting: “I’ve found my joy again.” A second joked: “After 800 years, I have forgotten how it feels to be leading.”
“Lampard I hate you for this,” replied a third, while a fourth commented: “This isn’t a drill? Can’t believe it.”
Not everyone was convinced by the early opener, however, with one posting: “Nah we are losing this one.” Another questioned: “Are we staying up?”
And they were right to have doubts, as the lead lasted just 12 minutes. Cherries left-back Matias Vina levelled the scoreline just before the halfway point of the first half.
However, centre-back Benoit Badiashile converted Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick eight minutes from time before Joao Felix added a third with three minutes to go to give Lampard his first win.
