Highly-rated Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana has broken the silence on his future amid strong links with a move to Chelsea.
Mauricio Pochettino has made a new goalkeeper one of his transfer priorities this summer. But, he may now have to look for alternatives to his primary target.
As previously noted by TEAMtalk, Chelsea are reportedly willing to make a ‘big offer’ for Onana. Inter value the Cameroon international at approximately £43m.
With Edouard Mendy tipped to leave Stamford Bridge and Pochettino keen to bring in support for Kepa Arrizabalaga, the Inter shot-stopper could be an ideal addition.
Onana showed his qualities in the Champions League final against Manchester City on Saturday. Indeed, The 27-year-old made one particularly good save to prevent Erling Haaland from opening the scoring in the first half.
Although, he couldn’t prevent Rodri from netting a fine goal to secure a famous 1-0 victory for the Cityzens.
After the match, Onana was asked about the links to Chelsea. In response, he said: “I’m so, so happy at Inter. At this professional level you never know what happens.
“I’m available for Inter, they decide and I will accept what they want. I’m happy at Inter.”
Chelsea rethink required after double keeper blow
Onana may not have completely ruled out a move to Chelsea, but, it certainly seems very unlikely after that interview.
As a result, Pochettino will now have to look for alternative options. Interestingly, one candidate at the top of his shortlist is another Serie A shot-stopper – Mike Maignan.
The AC Milan star is widely regarded as one of the best keepers in Europe. Chelsea have reportedly ‘made enquiries’ into signing Maignan, however, the Rossoneri have reportedly responded with an emphatic ‘no.’
Now, Chelsea will have to completely rethink their goalkeeper targets. What seems certain, though, is that Pochettino will be bringing in a new keeper this summer.
But, Pochettino also wants to bolster his midfield. Mason Mount is widely expected to join Manchester United this summer, while Mateo Kovacic has already agreed personal terms with Manchester City.
As a result, Chelsea will definitely need to sign at least one new centre-mid.
Romeo Lavia is one of their main targets. The Southampton midfielder is expected to leave St Mary’s this summer, due to the fact he wants to play Premier League football.
Moises Caicedo is another potential option. So, Chelsea will definitely be a club to watch in the transfer market. Although, they are likely to sell more players than they bring in.
