Jamie Carragher and Enzo Fernandez burst up in Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool draw

Jamie Carragher and Enzo Fernandez burst up in Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool draw

Jamie Carragher was left intrigued by Enzo Fernandez earlier today as Chelsea and Liverpool played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Axel Disasi – who was making his Chelsea debut – saw Mauricio Pochettino share the spoils with Jürgen Klopp in his first official game in charge of the Blues.

Throughout the game, Enzo Fernandez was a constant threat to the Reds.

Chelsea’s £106.8m man was everywhere against Liverpool, popping up all over the park as he knitted everything together for the Blues.

So, what did Jamie Carragher say about Enzo Fernandez? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Sky Sports pundit couldn’t believe how involved the Argentina international was in west London earlier today in an attacking sense.

Speaking live on commentary duty alongside Gary Neville and Peter Drury, Carragher said: “Enzo Fernandez’s position is really interesting. You associated him when he came in as a sitting midfield player but he is playing really high and getting forward all the time.”

We also thought Chelsea would be getting a holding midfielder when they signed the South American from Benfica in January.

However, Fernandez has proven himself to have many more strings to his bow than most people initially thought – including Carragher.

Pochettino’s plan for Fernandez was evident in Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

Fernandez has actually admitted that Pochettino plans to let him operate in more of a free role this season, and that was on show against Liverpool.

The 22-year-old told ESPN: “We talked a little bit about everything, where I felt most comfortable, everything.

“The truth is that yes, I like to play loose, and the function that I am going to fulfil this year is going to be that, playing double five but a little looser, trying not to have the responsibility I had last season, playing five alone.”

Fernandez was a presence both defensively and in attack against Liverpool, but with Moises Caicedo expected to arrive at Chelsea soon – someone who tends to sit in front of the backline – it will be interesting to see if Pochettino pushes his fellow countryman further forward on a fixed basis.
