Maatsen open Chelsea talks after Pochettino change of plan

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen remains in talks over a new contract at the club after Mauricio Pochettino’s change of heart, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (29 September) that Chelsea remain hopeful the youngster will sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino U-turned on allowing him to leave the club after Maatsen rejected a late move to Burnley – with the Lancashire club seeing a late bid for his services accepted.

The Dutchman’s impressive performances at left-back, on the wing and in a playmaker role during pre-season preparations convinced the new Chelsea boss of his abilities.

Since then, Maatsen has gone on to start twice for the Blues – including in the 1-0 win over Brighton in the League Cup on Wednesday (27 September), playing on the right flank.

He has also come off the bench on four occasions in the Premier League after kickstarting his career at Chelsea.

Maatsen, who came through the ranks at Chelsea, could now be called into action more regularly in his natural left-back role following a serious injury to Ben Chilwell.

The 21-year-old turned out 42 times across all competitions for Burnley last term, notching four goals and six assists as they were promoted back to the Premier League.
