Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has named Chelsea’s summer signing Nicolas Jackson as the player who should have taken the penalty against West Ham and not Enzo Fernandez.
Redknapp believes Jackson is Chelsea’s penalty taker because he is a striker and has lovely touches.
DAILY POST recalls that Fernandez squandered the chance to put Chelsea ahead against West Ham in Sunday’s Premier League encounter at the London Stadium.
The Premier League match eventually ended 3-1 in favour of West Ham.
“He [Jackson] certainly excited me in pre-season in the Summer Series as well,” Redknapp said while speaking on Sky Sports.
According to him: “He looked sharp. He was bright. He was good on the ball, he’s got lovely touches. He works extremely hard for the team as well. There were moments in the first half where I thought, ‘Wow, what a player this guy looks’. Unfortunately, when you are a No. 9 and a striker, you get judged on your goals.
“He needs one of those moments, like when Enzo Fernandez stepped up and took the penalty, I’d like to see him say, ‘I will take that; I’m a centre-forward; I will put the ball in the back of the net’.”
