Paul Merson has claimed he would pick Chelsea trio Hakim Ziyech, Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz when selecting the current Blues attack.
Chelsea are swamped with plenty of forward options in their squad, so it makes it a difficult decision for their manager Thomas Tuchel each game to name his starting line-up.
The aforementioned trio all started together in the recent Club World Cup semi-final win over Al Hilal, albeit Ziyech dropped out of the XI for the final when they beat Palmeiras
In addition, Tuchel can call upon the likes of Mason Mount, Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi to play the front positions.
Merson has shared his preferred front three right now:
“Mason Mount is injured and that’s a massive blow for Thomas Tuchel, but if I was tasked with naming a front three for Chelsea at the moment, I’d go for Hakim Ziyech, Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz,”Merson wrote.
Interestingly, The Evening Standard reports Tuchel wants to build his new-look Chelsea side centred around a forward partnership of Lukaku and Havertz.
Chelsea need consistency
Yes, it’s great to have the option to rotate and keep individuals fresh when the fixtures starting piling up.
However, it would be great for the same combination of attackers to get a string of starts together at some stage to help build chemistry on the pitch.
There is so much ability if the three left-footers of Lukaku, Havertz and Ziyech all start together.
Mount, who’s currently injured, would be very unfortunate not to start consistently if available.
There are signs of Lukaku, Havertz and Ziyech each coming into their own in some recent performances, which is why Merson could be right and they should start more often in attack.
Up front are Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz.
